I’m reading the Tolstoy guided by Simon Haisell’s Footnotes and Tangents substack. Probably would not have got to it otherwise!

I love the characters in Middlemarch. Dorothea, Causabon, Rosamund and the doctor all seem like real people to me.

The characters feel so rich and complex—Dorothea’s idealism, Casaubon’s rigidity, Rosamund’s charm (and flaws). And I’ll have to check out that Substack—sounds like a great guide to Tolstoy. I’m currently doing a readalong to To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf! 😀

Middlemarch is one of my favorites! My first book this year was rereading Anna Karenina and currently slowly rereading Brothers Karamazov. Love to mix the older classics with more current works. The classics ground me for just the reason you describe. 😍
