I witnessed someone bring down another person for not adding alt text and essentially telling them that their disabilities shouldn't excuse them from doing so which is plain rude and wrong to even say. Yes alt text is important but not everyone is capable of adding them and that's okay.

I tried one hosted(?) on chatgpt, I explained a lil and it did the hard work of putting words into a coherent description. Relying on it without checking the work is main issue IMO.

like just had to stop mid-way through an art share post bc i remembered id have to add alt text and the steps it takes to do so are overwhelming. i can only do it from my pc and only when im using postybirb to cross post cuz im already in that headspace (still hard tho). doesn’t work for reposts

I'm fascinated (derogatory) by the alt text culture here. Not because alt text isn't important but because making it a visible caption to sighted people has turned it into a stage for tumblr-tag-style jokes and essay descriptions of visual media to ppl who specifically don't navigate life visually 😂

Anyway "painting of a wolf" is 1000% fine and don't let people who seem to have forgotten/never known why alt text exists stress you out or, more importantly, become a mental barrier to posting your work!

No one's art is, really, but people visually impaired enough to use a screen reader don't really engage that much with something you just have to be able to see to understand. In our case, the most useful alt text is short and starts with an art term, like "painting" or "drawing." It's the fastest--

Sorry, it's weird to fuss over but my ex was legally blind and his screen reader friends would've haaated using this site. They liked music and written works, not long alt text describing a painting to people who may have never experienced color 😅
