If the zine is in physical form, you will need to consider the material of the paper and whether or not there's going to be an amount of shine. If it's a physically printed thing, I say light background would be better.

I like the black better as a standalone piece because it really pops out the character and accentuates details, but since it's going into a zine and to be paired with other pieces, I think lighter background will fit better overall. The texture really helps and adds a lot to it.

The dark provides a nice value contrast with the subject so it really pops more, which is nice for smaller prints IMO. If it's a larger print like a poster, the lighter background might be better since the subject would be larger in general.
