I assume some sort of oxide and the "gel" is an attempt to put into simple language. But my understanding of orange stuff in wetlands usually gets as advanced as: "it's probably some iron compound doing it's usual weirdness".
but SOMETIMES orange stuff in wetlands is colonial diatoms! i remember looking at some rusty looking goop from my front yard ditch under microscope and it wasn't rust, it was diatoms!
I didn't know that (see: out of my depth). Also, you have a front yard ditch? As someone who spends a lot of time messing around in ditches, that is very cool.
Translation: "Look, we know you came to see lions, and they are hiding from the rain and cold. Wouldn't you be? But look, there's mud to look at! It's much more exciting that some boring charismatic megafauna. You've got a cat at home for pity's sake."
