Examples like this are probably why the Labour government doesn’t announce every plan and policy to a right wing media that they know will invent whatever vileness is likely to fuel divisive hatred.
Farage riots last year, another dreadful example.

They do. Agreed. I don’t mind AC, I think he speaks a lot of sense and isn’t afraid to voice unpopular opinion (which can be part of his issue depending on your view)… but I just don’t think he’d be a well-received choice.

I agree with you, Claire, but surely it's up to Labour to fight back. They need to call out the bias and lies more forcibly. On a similar theme, they have achieved a lot so far, but in the main, the general public are totally unaware. They need a PR department that works (PR being Public Relations)

Just as an example of what Labour are up against - I woke up the other day to the news headlines on R4. They followed the announcement that Labour had hired 1500s more GPs with a comment that there were a lot of GPs who were still out of work. Why was this needed? "balance".

But not heard by the general public/society as a whole - that's the point. Those interested in the intricases of politics are a tiny proportion of the electorate. The overwhelming majority are only swayed by soundbites and those '3 word slogans'. 'Get Brexit Done', 'Stop The Boats' ring any bells?

Yep. All the good things they're doing are going unnoticed/unreported. Their comms are awful. They will always be up against the predominantly rightwing media, no matter what they do. The Mail/Telegraph et al cannot bear that we have a Labour government, even if/when it's not especially leftwing

It's not their comms, how do they deal with a media who completely ignore all the things they're doing. My suggestion for a while has been they should use that £2m media room of Johnson's and hold weekly briefings.

That is comms. They need to engage the media at least although not sure about weekly briefings. I remember every time Johnson appeared, that overwhelming feeling of "Oh god, what now?". But they do need to counter effectively the outright lies and disinformation spread and amplified by the Right.

I agree the comms still aren't good, but it really needs saying that Alastair Campbell had a much less hostile media to deal with. Compare the reaction to the Bernie Ecclestone scandal (which was a real scandal) with the confected outrage about gifts.

Valid point, but for example, where is the criticism of Gove's HoL appointment? They have there the only reason they will ever need for the 'Reform/Abolishment of the House of Lords and yet nothing? The majority of the public know who Gove is and what he is, without watching Parliamentary TV.

Around 50,000 more pensioners are now receiving pension credit as a result of being pushed to claim it by the means-testing of WFA - which amounts to £1000s more a year, not a couple of hundred pounds.
