Do you use an app to access your bank accounts on mobile? If so, an unsecured chat could give a bad actor access. Yes, it’s possible. The risks go far beyond your casual conversations—no one cares about those, but any information on your phone is at risk. A different story, isn’t it?

The fact Durov won’t bow down and kiss the ass of the French by giving them a back door into the app is enough to say that Telegram is fairly safe for most uses.
