Centrism works as long as the goal posts dont keep moving. Imagine centrism under Reagan, Nixon, Eisenhower. Centrism today uses a false assumption of 2 reasonable parties sharing core fundamental values. Today R's have morphed into a fundmentalist Quisling cult party that does not value democracy.

That centrism was called the “liberal consensus” during the post-WWII period up to about the mid 1970s.

Reagan wouldn’t really be a part of that per the writings of people way smarter than me.

We need to evolve language out of 'liberal' and 'conservative'. Neither accurately reflects the parties or leanings often assumed. Right now the D party seems (to me) to reflect more of a social consitutionist party, and R's are a Robber Baron pty that exploits Christo-nationalism. Not good name lol

When democrats moved to the center republicans saw that as an opportunity to move further right/become more extreme which is how we got to where we are now.

I left the Republican party after trump 45. I always wonder what the effects of 'party changers' has been to the Democratic party. I considered myself a moderate before I even left the Republicans. (Socially liberal, fiscally conservative.)
