I've been an RPG/JRPG nerd for 35+years as well, starting with the NES classics as a kid — and I've found the writing to be serviceable for what it is but also I, like, read other things like books that aren't meant for tweens yet adults well into their 30s still obsess over.
"This game made me feel something, therefore it's good," and "I put a lot of time into this game, so it must be good," are working their magic it seems. I really like Expedition 33, too, but I wouldn't go that far as some people are going online.
Of course. I mainly want games to move on from the three themes they use most often:
1. Violence begets violence
2. Grief is tough to process
3. It's tough being a dad
My one real problem with E33's story is that I thought it was doing something more original, but just ends up doing the last two.
Yeah it's an exceptional story by videogame standards. The fact we don't compare the writing to books or movies is pretty telling on videogame writing.
