Man I dunno what my brother did to socialize Dante but the dog groomer he goes to gives little report cards so the owners know what to work on for next time and Dante always gets “A+ Good Boy No Notes, We All Love Dante”

Especially impressive because he’s terrified of fireworks, thunderstorms, car engines, and other loud noises, but he’s very polite about the grooming apparatuses.
My dog, who is an absolute asshole at home, gets notes like this from our doggy daycare. “EVERYBODY loves it when Timber is here. He’s always so sweet.” And I’m just like
I work at a kennel and I usually have the opposite report to make.
'But he never does that kind of thing at home.'*
Well, here he's an a$$hole, I don't know what to tell you.
*I don't usually believe the clients when they tell me that.
That seems like it would be an issue of people not reinforcing training in multiple locations, yeah? It’s like when dogs do obedience classes but the training isn’t reinforced at home/at the park/etc, so the dog thinks it only has to act like that in that specific situation.
I was warned you gotta reinforce training in as many different conditions as possible so you don’t end up with a dog that behaves itself at home with its favourite person then acts like a monster everywhere else haha
You want to come and explain that to my clients, please? Because most don't listen to me -_-
It sounds like you've got a handle on your dog training. I bet your guy wouldn't give me a headache on the daily.
Haha we’re on a waiting list for a dog so I’ve been boning up on dog training books but haven’t had to put it to the test yet. Our puppy goal is to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizenship test because that seems like the best rounded test of “is your dog polite”
Absolutely. Just because your dog will come when he's called in your own backyard where there are no distractions does NOT mean that he's going to do it in doggy daycare when he he wants to stay outside after playtime.
Our doggo has a lot of anxiety and separation issues...and he was a puppy during COVID. Pre-COVID he was really social all the time. But I think during the beginning of COVID while walking in our neighborhood I'd see people and turn and walk the other way and...
Ha, yeah, we hear that a lot. People are convinced their dogs aren't sociable but then we have them out in our group with twenty odd dogs and they're having a blast. Always beautiful to see.
...that taught him to think of people in our neighborhood as threats. So he's sweet as can be with us at home. He's as sweet as can be at the doggy daycare or even at a dog park. But while on leash in our neighborhood, or if somebody approaches our house...MURDER DOG
