Honestly I think it’s kind of fascinating that the sort of “blank Stallone stare” became such an indicator of tough-guy attitude in art when Stallone himself looks like that because of nerve paralysis he’s had since infancy, and for a long time was a disability that made it difficult to land roles

Like, other tough guy actors definitely had some version of the emotionless tough guy mug, but there’s a very particular and recognizable way Stallone does that thousand yard stare compared to say, Bronson, Eastwood, Newman, Douglas, etc

The studios wanted to cast Bronson and like, as much as I like Bronson as an actor I genuinely don’t think the movie would have succeeded without someone playing Rocky as soft, guileless, and vulnerable as Stallone did.
