For some reason the thing I find helpful is thinking about how undemocratic the U.S. has been for most of its history. Sure, some things are different now, but it's not like the basic problems are new. And we've overcome them before, we can do it again.

And that's why things are the way they are now, because we never openly addressed or solved those issues.
