so you get "boba fett fights a rancor. boba fett fights another sarlacc" and so on and so forth style of storytelling, because they can't really conceive of something outside of just mashing together the toys they already have in existing ways.

i've seen people on IPs literally just go "this is [popular thing that exists] but with a slightly different skin" and the IP remains largely the same. that means it never feels like an actual story--at that point, it becomes a property of endlessly remixed nothingness. people lose interest.

Which is the other side of it, after you sacrifice the endless possibilities of evocative hints, what gets nailed down in its place will be the least-exciting *and* least-useful choice. And then nothing can dislodge it, and it sits on the story like a bowling ball on a rubber sheet.

You just described all my gripes with Bethesda's Fallout. I recently even compared FO3 to The Force Awakens to a friend who never played a non bethesda Fallout and the damage it did to the series to follow the surface aesthetic of FO1 instead of the themes and tone
