My husband is a huge Trekkie and wanted to show me DS9 right after the election. For obvious reasons. Lol. I just watched those episodes for the first time last week. I’ve been shocked about how poignant this whole series is right now. I just started season 4 and can’t wait to see more.

It’s great isn’t it. Probably my favourite of all the Trek shows. Just wait until you really get into the war with the Dominion. Some of those episodes really hit hard.

I thought I was rewatching it this past summer, but I forgot I bailed on it when distracted by Babylon 5 the first time around so it was 3/4 a new watch. Watching it now surprised me with how many side characters were so often featured as the series moved along.

One Hundred Years of Solitude, as a novel, annoyed me because of the repetitive nature. I felt like after the first 1/4-1/3 of the book I had the idea.

But the concept annoys me because it's so descriptive of us humans and our societies. Locked in an endless loop, "because reasons".

Something that took me way too long to really understand was the fact that of the three characters that got trapped in the past, it was the two minorities, a Black man and Sudanese man, that ended up in the district while the white woman ended up being "rescued" by a tech CEO.

I was a NextGen fanatic to the point that I refused to watch other Treks. I now rank DS9 as the best Trek, although I find Voyager pretty weak. I also thought Discovery was fantastic--really the epitome of Rodenberry's proposed values (although, I suspect his actual values didn't go as far).

I've bounced off the first season of DS9 so many times.

It seems like it would be right up my alley and everyone says it's amazing, but I get 9-10 episodes in and just find myself on my phone and give up.

tl;dr: In a "dystopian" version of 2024, cities put the poor, undocumented, and unhoused in walled areas to keep them "safe." And once you were in there you basically never made it out.

Those people, tired of being ignored, reacted violently, and it kicked started the social change the US needed.

A lot of their stories end up being told in allegory with alien stand ins for race, class, etc, but this one definitely went right for the throat. “Far Beyond the Stars” is another stand out DS9 episode that deals with racism in (I believe) 1950s SciFi writing/publishing

It's honestly scary how much of it is close to reality. Homeless districts, police brutality, racial profiling, white privilege.

Of course these still existed in the 90s, but the writers did an eerily good job of predicting how extreme they would become.

Yep. And in Star Trek First Contact, remember scene where they arrived back in the past, mid-2060s, after chasing the Borg sphere… Riker mentioned that was 10 years after WW3, 600 million dead from the war. Sci-fi often tells the future. Truly scary times ahead. :/
