I'd certainly say it's not "real"writing. It's extremely formulaic and stylistic writing, and because of those things it doesn't communicate to anyone but a very small slice of people.

It *can* be good, but I'd agree that in most cases academic writing has become formulaic drivel. I always point to Charles Darwin as an example of how science writing can be great literature
My wife is a scientist. I have huge respect for the dissemination of knowledge. But I also think that the communication of publicly funded knowledge to the public is pathetic. I get that highly technical knowledge is complex, but if it can't be communicated to the public at all that's a real problem
