I know some Syrian emigres and I can see how sophisticated and middle class they are. If these people are not frightened into submission by extremist violence they are among the best candidates for participatory democracy in Western Asia.

Being overly optimistic is naive. And you speak of the syrians as if they were a homogenous mass of people while they are a bunch of different cultures thrown into the melting pot of the balfour declaration. And yes damascus is peaceful, as was Kabul when the soviets withdrew, it didnt last...
