This ‘freedom’ narrative is too easily transferred from early WO2 Germany (Sudetenlandt etc.) to Russia for what is happening now. Historian Rutte thinks like that. But in 1945 we contracted with Russia for other than ideological reasons. I don’t think it can be different now, like a ‘just’ peace.

This “should” is killing many. The 2013 EU association agreement was not about democracy but about deep economic ties (excluding Russia from the rest of Europe). Even Merkel (biography) regrets that Barosso pushed it without a three party agreement with Russia.
