Dudes. The African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the oldest African-American denominations in the US. (it's Methodist btw.) The AME church was central to civil rights movement. It was an AME church in Charleston SC where the white supremacist shot up the congregation in 2015.

Thank you very much for this correction. I probably stumbled into that error of thinking because the methodist church some of my family attended (1st United?) had serious beef with the episcopal church a couple of blocks away.

also the Methodist church is an off-shoot of the Church of England (believers who follow the Method.) So early Methodists were Episcopalian. Here it just means that the AME church has bishops above ministers (episcopal = bishop, versus congregational, versus presbyterian [=elders].)
