As a few folks have pointed out, it's not true that Morton originated this phrase. Turns out it existed in similar form for a century or two prior.

That's the last time I believe something I read it a book about rain!

As someone who has written a book with a few factual errors in it, however, we should all be kind to authors.

Fact-checkers are overworked and underpaid, and it's hard as hell for an author to see their own work clearly.

Yeah this isn't true. Variations of this idiom have been found in print as early as the 18th Century. Morton rewrote it slightly and used it in ad copy, that's all.
