it is worth saying that the “anti-woke” character here is a humanities professor at a small liberal arts college & i will again observe that the anti-woke obsession with language reflects the extent to which they are primarily engaged in a status competition with their peers and not politics per se

I am so sick of these faux ‘left’ types laundering MAGA talking points by pretending that sensitivity to language politics is elitism incarnate. Guess what? Giving a shit about how you treat people is the foundation of a consistent politics oriented towards justice, including anti-capitalism.

Insufferable
language is full of paradoxes and words can mean so much more than just one thing.
I thought what you thought (well-phrased, btw), &[ took it as hip-talk for progressive politics in general.
When Fox News/GOP pols started talking abt some sort of checklist, I laughed.
And now the *left* is arguing over the checklist.
[Sigh.]
Can we start there?
"Latinx" is the way an English-speaker tries to be inclusive without asking Spanish-speakers.
These are neologisms, so is a minority of people that use it.
But no one use "latinx", the Spanish pronunciation of that doesn't make sense.
Spanish inclusive language guidelines solve that problem explicitely including "latino y latina" or replacing with an explicit inclusive word ("personas") as "personas latinas.
'the extreme left' for not wanting to meet nazis and rapists in the middle.
"Do unto others as you'd have others do unto you."
That's it.
Nothing more than putting the words of your god into daily practice.

The Evangelical influence has been huge! Hispanics probably hear more condemnation of LatinX at church than anywhere else.
I expect there's a serious name for what malaclypse the younger called "guerrilla ontology" as well.
It works.
My mom & I agree on guns for example, but she insists we don’t because she defines “gun control” like Fox, as banning them all. We can’t even discuss it.
Language DOES move political thought because it’s manipulated to keep us from finding common ground.
I otherwise am inclined to agree with your premise? It's interesting.

The idea that college professors are leftists, in any meaningful sense of the word, is bollocks.
Commentators: this, to me, is woke academic jargon
How many of the "There are only two genders!!" ppl also pointedly insist to the priest that "God Is A Myth!"
They just want to be the unmarked category.
it's tilting against 10-year-old windmills!
If anyone wants to criticize people for ineffective actions like virtue signaling go ahead, but woke is a bigoted shorthand for anything not white straight male at this point.
Pretending otherwise shows lack of touch with reality.
Thanks Joe Biden.
His description is the entire stance of what being woke is.
He is either an inveterate liar or stupid.
I am going with inveterate liar because the woke example is insanely incoherent & made up weird shit.
A colleague actually said this to me years ago and I still think he’s an idiot.
👍👍👍👍💯
Someone tell my wife that I didn't mean to say that last night I'm so sorry
- Requires enough knowledge of progressive politics to comment on it, but derisively
- No strongly held morals
- Strong ability to write misleading headlines
- Ability to be "right but not like you think you meant it" preferred
- Half a Brain (and not any more)
- Sneering sense of contempt and unjustified belief in one's own genius
People mold to the systems around them.
All the “woke”’ talk is honestly exhausting. Like, “I need a nap” exhausting…
They tend to hate intersectionality harder than republicans do because it asks for more than just posting class war.
These people are true “snowflakes” because they seem eternally wounded by being called out for being a__holes online.
Call People What They Want to Called
I once knew a guy who went by 'Holy Christ Thorn'
No sweat off my back. I often shortened it to 'Holy' if we were just passing on the street.
