ABSOLUTELY NOT
This is a great way to completely destroy the cause of ALT.
“We steal from artists” is NEVER the answer. Repost with ALT AND ATTRIBUTION
Or politely ask someone to ALT their work
Threatening people and painting folks that advocate for ALT text as thieves is a horrible strategy.

You're dealing with artistic people here. They are going to feel terrible about the oversight and probably overcorrect, if anything.
That's going to be an in depth alt-text you guys.
I can't seem to find a way to edit it in afterwards. It would be very helpful if there were an obvious way to do that. :/
it doesn't help for ones you already forgot, but it's a preventative for the future
there's also hover text, which is more useful as an annotation or comment or whatever.
Thank you.
at least that’s why i struggle to add alt text
Also, I have Autism and ADD, the answer isn't "wait til you have the energy to post". That's not how ADD works, that energy might never happen.
Alt text is important but so is properly crediting artists (as well as not being an asshole).
Part of accessibility is understanding things like this. ♾️
And I'm shitty at alt text on EVERY other platform, but here I made it compulsory. And yes, sometimes that means I delete the post or the picture, because I just can't.
I'm not saying it'll work for you, but it'd be great if you give it a go. ❤️
I know low-vision people who can't see the image without magnifying 800x who make sure not to share without getting someone to describe it.
Shown here: an Australian shepherd who has eaten several too many meals. One eye is brown, the other blue, and neither point in the same direction. Her name is Muffin, like Bluey's cousin, and I would die for her.
Not everyone can recognise what is depicted in an image.
For some, there is just the spoken output of the OCR detected text in a file. No colour, no faces, nothing but the text.
Hope this can be resolved.
I try my best to always add ALT text but frequently forget because of cognitive issues. If I started doing this with all videos without captions people would think I'd lost it.
What a nasty, unproductive thing to do.
Write it yourself in a comment below
Don't be that asshole who gets all offended.
If you really care, do the mahi or you're just an entitled bullshitter
PS turning on mandatory alt text in settings is brilliant
Like, hey if they can do it for me, I can just do it.
When I'm done with art I'm usually exhausted and with severe pain, I just need to get it posted so I can rest
this would also be punishing disabled artists who legitimately can’t write their own alt text anyway…
Advocacy for disability accommodation stops being advocacy when it starts punishing disabled folk for not being able to meet the accommodation demands of other disabled folk...and a disability is not always immediately clear, nor evident, by how or what someone else posts.
Making those resources accessible, gentle reminders, or simply blocking users who won't/can't.
Theft isn't a solution, it's adding grease to a fire 😭
How can a person make an artistic image, upload and post it to social media, but not be able to enter alt text?
and i think it's better and kinder to operate in good faith and take people at their word when they say "sometimes i can't do this thing" rather than ask them why
There’s an assumption if you can draw a picture you surely just be able-
Just add a comment with alt text and actually be helpful to people, rather than making accusations against people and making them even-
WE PROVIDE ALT TEXT WHERE NEEDED FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT SEE, FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT CONVEY.
STEALING IS A TWITTER HOLDOVER, we do not do that.
It’d be useful for artists too, who have made corrections to their work they didn’t see before posting.
A "would you like me to?" button, where a well meaning follower can ask, and the artist can allow someone they know or trust to fill in the gap. Creative folks and grammar nazis like me working together? For the good of all? C'mon, let's go.
The toggle says "require alt text before posting" & prevents you from accidentally posting before you add the alt text.
Now I'm in the habit but if I forget it's there to help me!
instead of encouraging people this will create animosity and people might purposefully not do it do to bad actors.
most people just forget/arnt used to it. I forget often.
i also dont think everything needs it. tbh.
and some people are just posting quick silly things
Like this person is making us look bad.
I sometimes contextualize why I reacted with certain memes.
Context to provide is info that would be evident to someone viewing the image and would be missed if the image were not there.
This is why it's been called an art form.
The good way is when the alt text really does a great job of communicating what the image is saying, but is also written artfully or humorously. Also stuff like names of sources or actors can enhance the experience for everyone who clicks.
People are ENTIRELY OUT OF LINE and way too aggressive about it. It's the same energy of caring more about having something to feel righteous about then trying to actually do goodwill by each other.
It's a bad path here just like Twitter.
We can't rightful decry fascist retribution focused behavior in leaders and then keep holding that energy at each other.
Also not an excuse to steal their content.
"Moth-winged fairy in a forest, colorful, watercolor effect, digital" is better than literally a blank square of exclusion.
Give what you can give!
1) alot of us are nuerodivergent i for one have an esscentric disorder and suck at describing things in a conventional way. Art is a way to express myself without explaining myself because i specifically struggle with language
As a result it makes me feel pitted against other disabled people in this context which is not a great feeling. I wish I could do it.

I do, however, have a knack for writing. Is there a volunteer system for this? I'd find it relaxing, to scroll a dedicated hashtag/feed to just add ALT to things as a stim. Srsly!
character name, implied vibe, location, important symbolism to include, name of fandom, etc
I'd be totally down to do this daily.
And sometimes alt just confuses me. If I say, "Here is a picture of my cat," do I need alt text saying the same thing? 🤷♀️
So yeah this stuff does actually discourage people from adding alt text 😐
Same as having to wait 5 months to get alt text after asking for help
Or do you have to quote and add description there?
As an aside, the indicator confirming alt text is present is ironically very small and hard to see!
Thanks for taking the time to tell me.
?
so idk, I'd rule the punishment as cruel or unusual.
Douglas Adams once said "nerdy" is if you have someone using their phone to discuss their phone.
