I don’t think it’s us she’s lying to. Either you’re educated enough to know real US history or you’re not. For the very large percentage for whom the answer is not, I don’t think ‘Eh, actually we’ve always kind of been okay with Nazis’ is the message we want people percolating right now.
But then that obviously leaves it open to being talked about as minimising or erasure. And I’m not Jewish so I’m going to be more blind to that anyway.

I think maybe there’s perhaps a well intentioned sentiment behind explaining. Like I’m pretty sure I just did it.
