These are fascinating. British cities show two dips in the pollution during the 1920s. I'm guessing linked to miners' strike in 1921 and general strike in '26.

Are there plans to add more US cities/regions? FAQs say US data comes from nat'l meteorological orgs (NWS?). Large metros like Miami and Atlanta don't have stripes yet but do have weather data back to 1900.

Currently Jacksonville is the only FL location with stripes. It was the largest FL town in 1900, but has been eclipsed by Miami, Tampa, Orlando, etc. Nearest stripes to me are from Nassau.

Thanks. We previously had graphics for each US state, and people asked for cities instead. We don't want the lists in the menus to get too long, but I agree we should add some more US cities next year. We plan to update the site with all the 2024 data included in February-ish.

Is there a way to change the averaged time period from 1961-2010 to something else? I'd be curious to how it changes the outcome.

If you move the reference period earlier then there are a large number of years with the darkest red so you lose some perspective. Vice versa for moving it later. There is a balance to choose a reference period roughly half way through the warming to date to get the same intensity blues and reds.

So it's mostly chosen to make the graph look good? It just seems a bit weird to me, a bit like p-hacking, choosing a period for that reason. I always assumed the plot was more absolute, like this one from Wikipedia.
