ActivityPub, WebFinger et al are interesting. You can install a WordPress plugin for example, and you can then follow and interact with other websites/users, and within the larger fediverse too, including logging into your website like it's a Mastodon account, via a typical Mastodon client.

Those Mastodon (or other ActivityPub-based solutions) can follow the site just like any other account.

I'm not really into Mastodon, but stuff like this has my attention as it really is decentralisation.

With that said, scaling is a problem with the likes of Mastodon.

Have you tried Matrix protocol yet? Basically IRC with federation between servers, but there's also P2P audio and video chat. Element is a good client. Been self-hosting our own server for about three years now, and I bridge all my third-party messaging services like FBM, WhatsApp, Discord etc in.

What makes it particularly interesting is that you can create a group chat, room, space, server etc, but people from other servers can all be in the same space and using it simultaneously. Imagine email threads with multiple recipients not on the same domain or mail server. Absolutely brilliant.

I've toyed with using Matrix protocol for an asynchronous turn-based multiplayer concept. Works well! Audio and video works beautifully too—my aunt and old man managed to grok Element instantly—been using it years without issues. I use it for biz as well—totally cool.

And as a heads-up, although you can join `matrix.org` public instance, if you want to fiddle around with bridging in other services and protocols, and do your own dev, you'll need to spin up your own server. Anything will do, even a Pi. Mine's running as Docker containers.
