How does El Salvador's recent agreement fit into all this? Esp. with regards to "taking any illegal alien of any nationality," as well as "dangerous American criminals in custody"? The wording is dubious as it's not "convicted criminals" – seems like they are trying to avoid due process.

One wonders is there naïvety here. A potential deportee in Guantanamo is practically less able to access legal advice. And we don't know (though can guess) under what conditions as to food & shelter Trump intends to hold the detainees.

What this is is - Trump gets a concentration camp. He wants to feel like a dictator & this is what dictators do. They punish those who go against them for any reason (real or perceived) & those who they believe are beneath them and so, they have the right to make them suffer.

If they're going to ignore the law, shipping them off doesn't actually accomplish anything. There's no benefit. They can do all of their pure lawlessness here with less expense

It does benefit them because one it appears more draconian and punitive and thus the misery is exactly the point. Also abuses that are literally out of sight of Americans makes it less likely there is public outrage. Plus it's a lot harder to get a lawyer when you are in Cuba so /1
