Here is the data for my Itchfunder. Itch is actually not bad for discovery, I dont know how this compares to Kickstarter, etc, but they were a very significant part of my traffic. This is with a more deliberate effort to post updates on itch, and with a decent follower count there. - ThreadSky

I feel like I should try to do some kind of helpful analysis here. Hmm, besides Itch being "not bad", I'll say that getting reviews is pretty crucial, you see Seed of World, Daisy Chase, and a handful of Substacks including Idle Cartuary. These were big.

Although the traffic numbers weren't super high compared to the top two, reddit and itch, they definitely had a much higher rate of views that converted to purchases. They came as recommendations from a trusted source, and are more well targeted to an audience who are inclined to like my game

Getting any traction on Reddit is an achievement in itself. How did you manage that?? Every interaction I've had with posting my work has gone so negatively that it made me quit altogether.

I looked you up over there, I think you did alright. I only saw positive feedback, did you get some trolls? I posted to a lot more subreddits than you though, theres a lot of hit and miss. Like surprisingly r/Roguelikes was huge for us, even though its a subreddit for computer games

I'd try to post with brevity in mind, but maybe adding maximum context is more important than I've realized. If I squinted real hard I could see how it would be interpreted as low effort posting?

Yeah, I think over there shorter is seen as lower effort. People post like full kickstarter page descriptions. Also I think you might have not put in double breaks between paragraphs. For some reason if you put a single break (like hitting enter once) it gets ignored and combined into one paragraph

Also I think your promo was pretty short. I wrote 3-4 paragraphs. Theres like no character limits over there so its good to take advantage of that

This seems promising. It always seemed like posters in my threads were on either extreme of the spectrum on what was "appropriate" self promotion. Might fuck around and peep that r/roguelike post. I'd like to do something similar in r/tarot for my survival horror dungeon crawler that uses Tarot.

Bluesky also has much weaker traffic in comparison to reddit or itch, but these were also much higher quality views. I think the take away is that traffic alone isn't the most important metric in advertisement. The likelihood of views becoming purchases varies a lot from platform to platform
