As one might expect we agree and disagree. We need to stay a major funder of PhDs (and will be the largest proportional spender in UKRI). We need to support diversity and so worked to protect regional spread. We need to support SSIs so have targeted the first focal awards.

Feedback from previous and existing centres for doctoral training (ie focal awards) has been good and has protected choice whilst building capacity or defending subjects at risk.

Is it ideal? No, but neither is a historically low response mode success rate, or a static budget, and the tension with the rising cost of arts and humanities research (digital, creative etc).

All of UKRI and indeed RCUK before it had to show value for money. Our choice after consultation has been to rebalance a portfolio which was more heavily weighted to PhDs than any other research Council, support response mode, and fund strategically aligned to sector trends...

And where possible win every penny we can from other sources in UKRI.
