Perhaps, but is there really any valid excuse? I am not sure lawyers have taken to heart the maxim that justice must be done swiftly to be justice.
With UK trial dates now 3 years later, it seems to me this failure of gov't means a lot of trials should be abandoned as unfair to the accused.

The lack of strategy is more telling - they underestimated how effective Trump's lawyers would be at delay and obstruction, and how the courts may go against them.

It was a one-sided litigation strategy, or - in other words - not a litigation strategy at all.

I think that Garland can be criticised for not going hard at Trump early on, but the federal courts demonstrated they were willing to play Calvinball to protect him, which is something you can't really strategise for. Fanny Willis deserves more criticism in this regard IMO

It is of course possible that, for example, certain members of the Supreme Court did foresee it. Remember their decision not to take up the immunity issue on an expedited basis in December 2023.

I think history will be broadly kind to the Biden administration, but the failure to ensure/restore justice — including this, addressing the Supreme Court politicisation and ethics issues, and more — will be the biggest criticism, only magnified by time from here as impact becomes clear.

Agreed. From my mostly uninformed position it seemed like a timid liberal hope (which I can empathise with only too well!) that the problem would just go away quietly without them being seen as taking a stand against an ‘opponent’, that could be spun, and risk upsetting his supporters

As for Biden, I don't think on his own terms he was a good president - neither Afghanistan and Ukraine were handled well, and he left it too long to stand down so as to protect the succession.

The Supreme Court ate up 7 months delaying this action against Trump - effectively assisting him evading due process as a result of his power and wealth.

That should be a staunch warning to US citizens about the state of their judiciary and political system.

I can't understand "running out of time". The crimes haven't prescribed. You prosecute without fear or favour. Immunity is an out of jail card issued by and for powerful people, and contrary to equality before the law.
