I think there is a naive feeling from the government that huge numbers of ‘economically inactive’ young people will fill the gaps in care. Also fruit picking and fish processing, which might be a challenging commute for city dwellers?

If they had come out said there is a crisis in care, low pay and recruitment problems which is fixed by immigration.

But it is going to be fixed by bringing care under the NHS and pay will go up to make it more attractive I could have got behind it.

And if we don’t have care places the NHS will be under further pressure. A continuous spiral downward led by a lack of nerve to do what’s necessary to get the money from those who have it to help share the burden of the costs and needs of society we all live in. I really despair now, we’re lost.

my friend's 94yrold mum was 'stuck' in hospital for some weeks because there was a shortage of care workers to look after her at home. There still is a huge shortage around here as it's a big retirement area. it's also an area of high unemployment. Agencies are always advertising for staff.
