If you're set on Maine that's obviously a different story. But my husband and I spent some time looking at NH and decided there just weren't quite enough job opportunities.
I just saw you were looking for trees. If that's a deal-breaker don't come to ND. We have gorgeous rolling prairie hills and dark lakes that reflect our creamy blue sky. Neighborly people, and local agriculture.
