Trying to see which post this is in response to. I agree that we're horrible at selecting gifts for others, but billionaires don't care as long as we're throwing money at their businesses was my main point.
I wasn't so much saying economists wouldn't write it. I agree economists can have intellectual honesty. I respect Reich and Krugman immensely for example. My point was that the NYT isn't going to be publishing takes like that any time soon as they move towards embracing oligarchy.
This paper helped me convince my extended family (some of whom are academics) that the adults should not all keeping buying each other presents anymore, and it’s been wonderful.
I totally agree. So, if you bought presents? I will help you. You can send all those presents to me, I will hand them out, and ruin some other underprivleged children.
Actually that same researcher says when you give unexpected gifts on non-holiday/birthday, they are not only more appreciated and remembered, have no awkward reciprocity attached, and have more meaning. But he says where folks fail in gift giving most often, is giving things instead of experiences.
I think that researcher has a very very valid point here. I would totally agree!
The best gift I have ever had, was my husband turned my dresser into a "make-up station", He installed a light, and all my make-up was neatly displayed, all the hair tools hung next to the dresser on hooks, etc!
This is a good take. But at a higher level of generality, more took issue when she used her economist background 2 wade far into parenting advice on COVID policies, like mandates, return 2 school, & vaccines-which seemed 2 disregard many considerations & 4 which she has no obvious relevant expertise
Thanks to you both for explaining! Helped jog my memory too. Giving Covid + parenting advice completely outside her area of expertise. A Times specialty.
