rolling my eyes at the idea fMRI is a valid means of assessing connectivity in the presence of modulators which directly interfere with the physiology it purports to measure.

Yes and the opposite makes much more sense. To get a conscious state you need a carefully orchestrated group of events but if any one of them goes wrong you fail to get consciousness. Many of those misfires will be unconscious so that is why there are more ways of having an unconscious state

I would think that since diff species perceive differently & communicate differently they will have diff brain activity when they are conscious. Unconscious deep slow wave sleep is quite similar across species. Seems like consciousness persists when things go off e.g stroke, drugs, REM sleep, no?
