Trying! But finding time to practice/fit in a group is hard. (Woodwind-recently-turned-cellist here.) Also, cello is hard. 😅 At least, getting past the mid-level plateau is...
There are so many online resources now. YouTube tutorials, dedicated websites both paid and free to help with many instruments and even Facebook groups. There has never been a better time to learn.
I at 57 years old I began learning the saxophone in March of 2022 with a used instrument and a course on Udemy. I have used many online resources since then and believe that I have progressed quite nicely. I participated in my first online collaboration this year.
My daughter started with a ukelele. Entirely self taught. Progressed to acoustic and is buying herself a Telecaster for her 18th birthday next month.
I'm currently messing around with MIDI, DAWs and sampling.
Played the violin in middle and high school. Pulled it out to play several years later and when I tightened the bow, the horsehair fell out in a beautiful cascade. Put it back in the case for another day that hasn't come.
And there has never, in the history of music, been a better time to learn an instrument. Ranging from free lessons on youtube, to patreon type lessons, to actual individual skype style lessons with professionals, and all the way back to print options- there are so many possibilities today.
I didn’t get three paragraphs in before I read “kids receive plenty of music education,” and I can’t continue. That is very often NOT the case, and a major reason adults don’t play instruments - they weren’t taught a love for music as children.

Ukulele is an easy way to start.
Caution:
Don’t learn the recorder or slide whistle. I did. And I learned that people do *not* want to hear those instruments.
