"Shortages of police officers, well-intentioned but harmful reforms, and comprehensive dysfunction in city hall have conspired to make it feel like America’s greatest city is spiraling back toward the bad old days," writes Charles Fain Lehman:

When I saw the headline (and didn’t click the article), I wondered which right-wing turd climbed out of the toilet to write this shit. He’s an “intellectual” cop.
Yes, but not Daniel Penny who murdered a homeless man, taking six minutes to do so and even being told to let him go. The media had no hand-wringing there. But the death of a psychopath CEO has the bootlicker media hand wringing about crime.
I find plenty of space in my brain to condemn both of the murderers, and still have space to condemn the CEO and his company for their complete lack of humanity.. I don't need the media to tell me who's bad.
Just another example of bootlicker journalism pandering to MAGA conspiracy theories. Yeah, harmful reforms that don't put poor people in jail for years while they await trial. Yeah, harmful if you're a rich asshole who dodges taxes while mooching off of infrastructure.
Especially with the corrupt administration of Eric Adams. I can’t understand why the Governor won’t recall him. Her poll numbers are terrible and she will not get my vote for re election
Crime is down in NYC. The subway enough. Still some people have a perception problem that’s why the governor is doing this. For a city of 8.5 million people it’s pretty good. Stop causing panic
Please. I’ve lived in NYC since 1993 (I’m originally from rural Vermont). Things have NOT spiraled out of control except for (maybe) the attitude of the NYPD. They’ve been having a Big Sulk ever since de Blasio had the temerity to have the “talk” with his mix raced son.
At its height in 1990, "the bad old days", there were 2245 homicides in NYC. In 2023, there were 386. That's a rate of 30 per 100K people (1990) v. 5.3 per 100K (2023)
Not sure about that. I saw 6 police officers walking around central park looking for Luigi when the ceo was shot. Looked like they had extra, if anything.
Feels that way? Hmm. I just used Google to look up the crime statistics in NYC. Crime appears to be down. What possibly could be making people feel it is up?
More “vibes”. So what if violent crime is falling and a fraction of what it was in the 90’s? It’s like the economy: unemployment 4%, GDP growth 3%, inflation 2.6%, but if people feel like the economy is bad, I guess it’s bad.
How about writing to dispel the myths rather than promoting them?
Clearly the only solution to… (checks notes) crime being down… is a full police state and trillions more spent on militarization of the police. Thank you Atlantic.
Ya know you don’t HAVE to regurgitate right wing bullshit right? Anecdotal evidence doesn’t make something real.
I looked Charles Lehman up and his whole career and identity is building a police state. I’d bet a thousand bucks he has a panic room in his home. He has a child, so his paranoia is being passed to another generation.
Tragic collapse of standards and credibility at The Atlantic. Whatever good journalism exists at the publication will be tainted by these regular forays into red meat click bait

Here are his greatest hits. Fuck this guy.

do some real reporting.
The photo ops were fun.
Would you guys pay for my article about how bad the American Whaling industry is? How about how bad it would be if we got off the Gold Standard?
I have a lot of good ideas (assuming you don’t look into any of them).

I've got news for Maryland suburbanites / Atlantic editors.
"For the ninth month in a row, reductions in overall index crime prevailed in September 2024"

fear and loathing sell...
That’s my best guess.
I lived in NYC in the “bad old days.”
Crime today in NYC is not even close to what it was back then.
Really thinking hard about canceling my Atlantic subscription—they’ve been publishing a lot of this type of bs lately.

Charles Fain Lehman sounds like somebody who shouldn't be paid for incredibly terrible sentences like that.
