This needs to be proclaimed loudly and repeatedly to capture the attention of the nation and begin to explain the massive benefit universities provide to the public. Readers of The Atlantic are probably already mostly supporters, although many have jumped on the anti-college bandwagon as well.
This is horrible governing. Holding a university hostage to force them to change their academics is unconscionable. You think Covid made a huge negative impact on students? This attack on universities, research and science is generational. It will set research back years!
That attack is well underway, killing funding for research, deporting students and professors. Nobody could recommend any foreigner to go to the US to study or research, or to attend a conference
Forceful response by the colleges and universities is required. I suspect that they will not, attempting to placate and negotiate with those who want not their acquiescence but their destruction
No idea why university leaders are not coordinating and messaging this better. They are responsible for providing a lot of jobs in their areas, providing significant research in many areas, and yet seemingly are not willing to fight back.
CBC radio reported about a questionnaire given to Canadian researchers in joint research with American universities. Govt funding would be, & likely will be anyway, pulled based on how we answer. Guess we will have to go it alone. We won’t be putting America first - research first.
But as in corporate America (and even Prep schools) the leaders receive insane salaries and perks while the teachers (except business bros) get scraps. They aren’t going to rock the boat.
R1 universities need to be pulling together to resist this. I suspect no real leadership will emerge from upper administration, so it will be up to faculty.
