“Trump’s approach to countering China has been so scattershot, so inept, so face-smackingly absurd, that it sometimes seems like a covert policy to destroy America’s reputation,” @dkthomp.bsky.social writes:

Oh sure, it's super covert. I have no idea it's even happening every hour when my phone chimes and tells me explicitly that it's happening. Secrets kept, for sure, from us and me and us. Maybe future historians can puzzle this one out in hindsight retroactively looking back from ahead.
I would not be surprised if Trump or members of his administration are unwitting agents of foreign intelligence operations.
Their greed and self-interest are obvious points of manipulation. Their self-assuredness and hubris may make them incapable of seeing that they're being manipulated.
Fake News: Trump touts a “great” UK trade deal, but the U.S. already runs a surplus, exporting $74.3B and importing $64.2B in 2023. The UK ranks 7th-8th as a partner. Real focus should be on larger deficits with China or Mexico. This deal adds little to an already favorable balance.
