Seconding this, as a white dude who came up in the Mountain Music community:
I don't know how they did it, but between Rocky Road to Dublin, Go Lassie Go, and Pick Poor Robin Clean, the songs were *wrong*. Wonderfully performed, but unsettling in a way I can't quite put my finger on. 1/

What I liked about his sequence is that every Black person I’ve talked to about Sinners rightfully mentioned how *catchy* his musical interpretation of “Rocky Road to Dublin”. They mention unconsciously tapping their feet. Or moving their shoulders. Or nodding their heads, etc. etc

Read as little as you can about it, and go see it.
Remmick had, somehow, the opposite of that. His singing was... well, pardon the pun, but cold, while still being lively. Bloodless. Emptied.
Joy. Dancing. Familiarity. Community. An end to pain, and want.
And every bit of it hollow and unholy, however genuinely offered it was.

The difference is subtle, but it's there.
You can notice it in brass performance, too.
But not even quite that.
Too bad my blues/Irish musician relatives are also too scared to watch!
