Trying to convince my white friends that the anxiety of the moment isn’t us being persecuted. We are learning how to make brave decisions, we aren’t being brave yet. Every exercise of bravery is preparing us and those watching to be brave. The bravery will require real discomfort, not just anxiety.

Exactly this. What many are calling persecution is the shedding of comfort. It’s the disorientation that comes when the system you’ve trusted begins to reveal itself—and you have to choose between complicity and conscience.

The toughest conversations I'm having are ones with white audiences who are -- with honesty and earnestness -- asking why their version of protest isn't enough. Someone actually asked me yesterday, "So you want us to show up with pitchforks the first time? That's unreasonable, don't you think?"

This does not shock me. I am a citizen from Mexico, and I have never seen a more "comfortable" group of people. Real pain and suffering has not generally been a widespread challenge here. Of course, the concept of real sacrifice is foreign to a lot of people here.

That's why this is going to be a very long, painful road for most white Americans, for whom this country was built. It's the "it couldn't happen here" and "it can't happen to me" crowd. All those folks saying, "this isn't America," when, for many, that's precisely what it is.
