The new movie is only using the comic designs as aesthetic choice because otherwise it's so far removed from the general appeal of the smurfs and it does feel like a waste.

Animatt or Animated Antics said something along the lines that this movie looks to be one of the most blatantly executive run animated movies in recent history.

I'm not fully sure what is being seen was what Chris Miller or Pam Brady originally envisioned.

I don't really know. Best thing I can guess is that Transformers and TMNT both have more dedicated fanbases than Smurfs (in America) plus both Mutant Mayhem and TF One were able to create their own clear identities and directions during development.

Transformers One was able to set itself apart by being a prequel tragedy origin story, Mutant Mayhem had the clear "let's focus on the teenage side" and sketchy art style locked in early enough for those aspects to be fully exploited.

I'm not sure what very unique ideas this Smurfs had in its earlier stages of development. Either they got snuffed or a lack of them may have allowed certain heads to prevail or make certain demands.

In terms of adaptations in general, Hollywood is a yo-yo. As a Transformers fan, I can say that last year's Transformers One did take creative liberties but was clearly a love letter to the franchise and was heavily inspired by past works.
