Back in 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine, there were some calls among the Liberate HK crowd to go to Ukraine and join the frontline. I’m not sure how many actually did, but I’m also certain it’s not 0

This was from Dec 2022. The HK government go super mad about *that* flag being used. But any HKer on the ground helping with the Ukrainian war effort would naturally fly the Black Bauhinia

Also, need to emphasise that the HKers who chose to join the Ukrainian war effort are not LARPers. They absolutely and sincerely love Ukraine. What Ukrainians did in 2014 was a huge inspiration for HKers in 2019. We do not forget those who came before us, those who showed us the way.

I’ll move some of the art over, but in February 2022, HK protest artists started making art in support of Ukraine. This one is of Lego Lady Liberty - but instead of the Black Bauhinia, she’s holding the Ukrainian flag

Some of the HK pro-democracy channels still post art for Ukraine and calls for prayers for the country. And every now and then, when a martyr with connections to the HK pro-democracy movement die on the frontline, those channels mourn their loss.

I think the latter. There's also "I don't like the CCP, and they are communists and therefore other things I don't like must also be communists". Weirdly, the idea that 'China and Russia are both imperialists' is the correct take, it's just... a different vocabulary?
