I also thought ‘nationalism’ was a dirty word. But after the outbreak of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Hamas’s invasion of Israel on October 7 2023, I have realized that nationalism is not always a bad thing, especially when it involves defending your country.
Patriotism =/= Nationalism. Patriotism is loving your country/doing what you can to improve it and Nationalism is putting your country before everything; including fellow citizens and other countries.
I’d rather look for the historically correct signs of fascism, namely:
- oppression of free speech
- a disdain for democracy
- hate of capitalism
- encouragement of political violence
Make of this what you will, but one particular political affiliation comes to mind.
