Looks like a mainly 🇨🇦🇫🇷 joint. The Canadian partners are CDPQ Infra, AtkinsRéalis (aka SNC-Lavalin) and Air Canada. The French partners are Keolis, SYSTRA, and SNCF Voyageurs.

How much of the project will the public actually own in the end? Where will trains be built? What will happen to the publicly-owned Via Rail and its unionized workforce, much of which will be displaced by this new line? Lots of important details to clear up.

AtkinsRéalis (SNC-Lavalin) will probably be building the tracks, but who builds the trains could be up in the air. Canada already has (and/or could invest in expanding) capacity to build trains. The manufacturing piece is a key opportunity in the present moment.

While it’s not all sunshine and unicorns, I have to say I’m thrilled that this is finally happening. I wish there were a way regions outside the Golden Horseshoe to access reliable and affordable rail service (VIA ain’t it).
