2. In TRISTRAM SHANDY (1759-67), Sterne has his narrator tell—or try to tell—the story of his life. But this proves such an impossible feat for Shandy, that he isn’t even born until Volume 3. The narrative is fundamentally about the process of narration.

3. The Novel, as a form, has its origins in metafiction. Many of the earliest novels are about novelization. A more “traditional” novel doesn’t fully take root until Scott, Austen, Dickens, Thackeray, et al.

The foundations for that are laid in the first part - when he claims the story he is writing is not his own but a translation of a work by an Arab writer. Frankly, it’s astounding how many novelistic devices Cervantes invented. What a book!
