I once had a job where they insisted that I set up the coffee maker for the weekly meeting the next day even though I told them I don’t drink coffee and have never made it in my life. Never got any complaints about it, but you’d think that was a job they wouldn’t want to leave to an amateur.
My mom doesn’t drink coffee but I got hooked as an adult and now my son is more avid than I. I wish i had learned from my grandma because she made a great cup of coffee. I recall her using the “sock”. I use a Nespresso or Moka. My son has the fancy espresso machine that I am afraid of.
It can absolutely turn in to an insane rabbit hole and I don't think my palette is refined enough to taste a difference. My abeula used to just make instant coffee with sugar and milk in a saucepan on the stove, but the greca is probably the simplest. Especially in small batches.
I think that’s true for me too. I love the ritual of coffee. The comfort of the warmth and *occasionally* I can taste a difference. I do enjoy ordering coffee from PR - Anything to bring myself closer to the island.
If you have an electric kettle (so you can aim for a particular temperature) you don't even really need a grinder, just some pourover coffee filters (or a cheap reusable one), some relatively freshly ground coffee, and 10 minutes talking to the coffee people at Fante's.
If you're a tea drinker, an inexpensive pour over set to use with your kettle will make a very nice couple of cups. A lot of them come with a measuring scoop to make it pretty fool proof.
Yeah, it's usually just like one big scoop per cup of water and you just kinda slowly pour the hot kettle over the top of it and then obviously kick out any guests who would ever complain. It all looks a lot more serious than it is.
