The fight to get the King assassination files released begins in a few weeks. John Lewis last led that fight, but I hope someone in Congress steps up to fill his shoes.

I was not alive during his time, but my parents constantly reinforced his actions and speeches and, in this house, we do the same.
A lot started to make sense that day - to a 6th grader.
Companies came before citizens.

I'd heard the name "Martin Luther King" before, so I went to the kitchen & told Mom he'd been shot.
She turned from the sink, ashen, stricken.
"Oh, no. No," she said, & pulled the apron over her face.

My mom rarely cursed.
“Jonny, what happened?” I repeated what I had just heard, having no idea what it meant.
She did. “Oh, my God! Oh, my God!”
Just because you're white doesn't make you special or exceptional.
That respect & kindness is a 2 way street.
They NEVER used racist words.
I was just a kid, too, when Dr. King was assassinated.
