When I've tried to engage Lynch's works in the past, I've found them unsettling and off-putting. But, over the past few weeks, having heard the genuine outpouring of praise regarding his artistry and humanity, from collaborators and fans alike, I feel compelled to try again. The Elephant Man is one of the greatest films ever made on whatever metric you want to use. Beautiful cinematography, exemplary performances across the piece I will go to my grave believing it’s Anthony Hopkins best performance and deserved as many awards as John Hurt. David Lynchs best film.

Accepting there's a blatant plug for an interview I did before Christmas imminent, but it's Patti Cake$. A film that got really good reviews and then completely disappeared.

Chris Columbus helped bring it to life. Spent a good chunk of this asking him about it.

Interesting range of titles, but sorry ... no competition. The Elephant Man is a wonderfully crafted film and the acting of Hopkins, Hurt, Gielgud, and a Freddie Jones tour de force; Hannah Gordon's best film work, plus Anne Bancroft and too many more to mention here.

A 14 year old me sat transfixed throughout Elephant Man. Prompted me to go & see Eraserhead at the Scala & become a lifelong fan of Lynch. Hoping Mark will choose the same.
