My suburb has changed such a lot in the last 15 years or so. Houses knocked down, several built on the block and no trees planted. Hot fake grass. Council and the State govt have not looked after the environment.

As blocks get smaller trees in the road corridor become so important. Not 3m high shrubs but proper trees. Councils need to over rise their maintenance sections and advocate for taller trees.

Anecdotally- North Bondi is a place of two halves:
Above Blair Street( trees) and below Blair Street (no trees).
One is way cooler than the other in summer….

It’s probably more like Curlewis st - just look at old photos & understand the underlying ecology- south end of Bondi was protected ecosystem with a lake, while north side of Bondi was windswept sandhills, Dover Heights rock.
Country still present in urban Australia!

I hear trees are very expensive. I was once complaining to someone in the know about how playgrounds have expensive shade sails and why can't they just plant some nice shady trees?

Apparently trees have a lot of maintenance and insurance.

Playgrounds need shade structures, while the trees take their time to grow.

I'm a gardener, I have trees all around my house, (fire resistant foliage), and grass, not hard surfaces. I grow shrubs in front of north facing windows. Over this summer, I have measured the temp in my, and my neighbours yards, my yard is 10C cooler on average, big dif on 40C days. Gardens are cool

I asked some of my older neighbours why they refused free trees from the council for their barren front yard , they said "there's too much mess of leaves and flowers to sweep up". A moment of irrational violence crossed my mind.
