My understanding is that so many people were effectively becoming vegetarians because they distrusted the meatpacking industry that the businesses themselves joined in the call for effective government regulation to save themselves from themselves.

Look at the food and safety issues we have had with regulations. Chipolte, Boeing, apparently lettuce that no one bothered to tell us about, the list is endless. This is one of the scariest things yet, and it is hard to rank them at this point.
