Wouldn't it be so nice if we could just take the manager's words at face value? The club are trying their hardest. External factors are making it hard. January was always going to be difficult. He feels supported by the club. Things will improve.

I just want to accept what he's saying…

This was my approach, but the combination of a) dismal results while our playing style drifts so far from Angeball b) new players going down injured seemingly every match, and c) zero outfield reinforcements, have left me feeling like this is all heading toward an inevitable conclusion.

Yes, perhaps there is a certain inevitability to it. Perhaps it will go down in legend as a high risk, high reward bet that did not pay off. Maybe. To really know one way or the other, I'd like to see the club commit to a third season. I have more patience for than than another new manager cycle.

I agree. And really a period like this was inevitable in a rebuild. But the club’s unwillingness to respond to crisis tells me they aren’t cut out for this - ie the spend strategy is too rigid.

I’d love to believe we will get through this and next season will be glorious, but I’m also aware that in just 12 days we could be (and based on current form should be) out of the CC and the FAC, with only the EL to play for. And if you think things are toxic now….

Occam’s Razor tells me that the managers PR is an obligation rather than an option, so that won’t tell you any more than they have to.

I’m sure things are happening in the background, but they will only pay up for the right player.

The account in @vincerugari.com's book of his time with the Socceroos is revealing. The unravelling during the WC qualifying campaign. The press and ex-player pundits turning on him, and, crucially, not feeling supported by the hierarchy. Signs of his discontent were there that perhaps aren't now?

Australian soccer has two histories pre 2005 and post 2005 when the game got whitewashed. Ange was from the old school. The game in Aus is a fishbowl & agendas/allegiances are magnified, especially given only a few journalists cover the game in Aus. He knew he ran his course in the country & left.

To me he means they’re still backing him, particularly the players. He hasn’t lost the dressing room, regardless of outside noise. Once that’s gone then the writing is on the wall. Regardless, he’s been let down by hierarchy. Look at the pics from the training ground today. Looks like school kids.

He's only been let down by the hierarchy if he pushed hard for more, knew they could have done more, but failed to deliver more. He might be accepting of the fact that things just haven't worked out as they all planned it together. He might be telling the truth when he says he feels supported.

He’s mentioned the need for reinforces for some time now. The constant reference for injuries in the public the past two months should have been enough. End of the day that’s public facing, I’m sure they’re different convos & factors internally we know nothing about.

There’s 3 things:

Ange is a straight talker;

Ange won’t air dirty laundry without purpose;

Ange will never reveal or want to talk tactics outside the club.

Within those parameters you can trust what Ange is saying. He’s given enough clues to some real thoughts eg. “Playing with fire”

You're not alone. My guess is that Spurs have clear targets they can move quickly on in the summer (e.g. Dibling) but only one of those (e.g. Kinsky) could be moved forward.

I buy the crit that they should have been better prepared for Jan to some extent but if there are deals ready to go then you don't want to make moves interfering w those future deals or panic buys (e.g. Radu) so then you're looking at loans (e.g. Muani, Brobbey) + opportunism (e.g. Tel).

The former are tricky because sellers want obligations to buy and the latter are, by definition, hard to plan / prepare for. I also don't really think it's a case of Daniel spend more money...sure, everyone has their price but there is a limit and Spurs are a lemon in this market.

Essentially, they're stuck while the squad are experiencing an outlier scenario in terms of injuries, compounded fatigue and stupid bad luck in close games. I actually think Spurs are in more trouble than Opta suggest because of the cumulative fatigue and prospect of recurring injury but TBC.

Yeah, I do think there are things Opta aren't taking into account when running their model simulations. However, they do say they're using historical and *recent* data, and using betting market odds, so you'd have thought fatigue and re-injury are being included indirectly.

Yeah, you'd think so but also not sure how well the cumulative fatigue of the (available) squad and the presumably increased likelihood of injuries as a result can be captured by past data. Still think relegation is highly unlikely but would estimate higher likelihood than we're seeing

Nope. Not even close. Untill recently, maybe nov, I was in the levy has made mistakes, but mostly, done a good job & I believe ultimately stadium/property money will come into the club. I'm now struggling to see that as all signs point to that not being the case. And I really really hope I'm wrong!

In my 63 years, we've won 13 cups and had 50 years in which we've won nothing. We've always been a top 6 side with occasional cup success at best. Of course it's a futile, hollow experience but it's who we've always been. Poch briefly made us believe we could be more than that but we're not.

Let's be honest, I just want my kid to see us win something / would absolutely take us being back to my childhood days of 80s when we were brilliant - but a cup team.
I do think levy, to his credit, has us in a place where *could* be challenging top 4, winning cups, and maybe leagues. But...

I know, the big picture is that we're Tottenham. We're about more than just the results. My view is long-term and I don't even see relegation as the big deal some do. Momentarily embarrassing, but the club will endure.

Kind of. Levy's history of penny pinching has me unwilling to say the club is doing everything. Are they trying? Undoubtedly. Could they do more? Likely, yes.

Yes, trying within the boundaries and constraints set by the leadership. That they are trying their best does not mean they are also not setting tight constraints. Both can be true. It's a good point.

Let's say that Levy and the board (mainly Levy) is saying that all transfers must have some kind of value for money. Then factor in Ange's demands that any new recruits are not just warm bodies.

Question asked many times lately: why don't they come out and say that then? Thinking about it, if you give too much away about your boundaries, it then signals to those you are negotiating with that you have limited options. I'm not a negotiator, but that strikes me as imprudent.
