Using UK Biobank data @ukbiobank.bsky.social (100,000+ people aged 50+), we estimated how chronic pain prevalence changes if:
🔹 No one had experienced childhood maltreatment
vs.
🔹 Everyone had.
✅ Women: #Chronic #pain increased from 5% to 8%
✅ Men: #Chronic #pain increased from 1% to 4%
More insights ⬇️
🔹 Some pain effects were linked to poor mental health caused by maltreatment
🔹 Adult trauma (bereavement, illness, assault, financial issues) increased chronic pain risk
🔹 The pain impact was even greater for those who had also experienced childhood maltreatment
✅ Prevention is crucial – Reducing childhood maltreatment could lower chronic pain cases later in life
✅ Early intervention helps – Supporting mental health & managing adult trauma could prevent pain.
