It seems to be Thestral-inspired, which is specific to that franchise. The concept of a skeletal horse is much older (1800's Mari Lwyd), and black horse myths have been around forever in most cultures (Kelpie, Arion, & Famine, many more)
I'm doing some research because I've dabbled in and out of this rabbit hole before, but most of the lore of the Thestral is a borrowed cluster of previous myths, combined in a way that kind of makes it uniquely identifiable.
"You can see this Uni head too right?..." is the headpiece's item description, and the idea that it was invisible to most people is very Harry Potter. The Turkish Tulpar myth has invisible wings upon landing, and if spotted will disappear from sight, but it symbolizes speed not death.
The irish Dullahan (headless horseman) myth is the closest neighbor to Thestrals in terms of influence. He would ride a black horse or perhaps a drawn carriage, and anyone who saw him would soon after pass away, thus the connection to death & warnings.
There is also the Ankou (Grim Reaper) who sometimes appears as a skeleton man, or just a hooded man, and also rode a horse or drawn carriage, but not always. All of this would've been a common influence for the HP creatures.
AHHHHHH I was thinking that the set looks so cool but don’t want anything to show support for the hp franchise with how awful jkr’s been the last decade+
Yes definitely!! And you aren't alone in that!! I certainly don't want any more of my money going towards her crimes 😂😂 but the wearables aren't official, and since then, many other people have been making black/skeletal horses too.
Yeah the set got leaked a lil bit ago and the neoboards have been in flames ever since (esp with the situation that just happened with the mods and trans positivity threads)
I always just avoid the neoboards until I feel like helping people with their quests because they’re usually a miserable cesspool of -isms 😭 I’m glad people are talking about it!
This outfit (released for the last Uni Day) and the leaked Lupe Day set are both explicitly Harry Potter themed. Based on other parody items, though, there’s no “legal” issues, just the moral ones. u.u
